Gary Weinke

On Saturday, April 25, 2020, Gary Weinke passed away as a result of complications from COVID-19. He was 67 years old. Gary lives on through his wife of 31 years, Naomi; his 6 children, James, Nathan, Travis, Amy, Lacy, and Michelle; his 17 grandchildren; and his siblings.
"He was friendly to everybody. He had a very big heart," remembered Eric Butcher, who worked with Gary. This is a sentiment that has been echoed by many, including those who knew him best.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Naomi described Gary as being direct, honest man, who held strong opinions. "If he thought it, he expressed it, " Naomi is quoted as saying, "even when his family did not always want to hear it. But, he also had a lighter side. He could be very comical, very caring, very loving." He was a gun enthusiast, who enjoyed camping and football. He was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
Gary lived a life of service to his family, his country, and his community. He was an Army veteran and a member of The American Legion, Post #22, Linton, Indiana where he lived. He worked at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility for 13 years prior to his death. According to the Indianapolis Star , Gary and Naomi planned to retire together. The article also stated that they were using the money he earned for daily expenses, which allowed Naomi's earnings to be saved.
When Gary contracted COVID, the reality of the pandemic had not been fully realized, especially in the rural areas of Indiana in which he lived and worked. His death was announced with solemnity by the Indiana Department of Correction. Gary was the first employee in the Department to lose his life due to COVID-19. He was posthumously awarded the One Voice United Gold Medal of Honor.
Gary lived a blessed life, loved by many. He will always be a part of the lives of those whom he loved and touched. May he rest in peace.
