Layfierre Rodeiquez Mitchell, or “La La” as he was known by his loved ones, was a gentle giant, at 6-foot-4-inches tall.
Layfierre died on April 17 at a hospital in Owensboro, Kentucky, nine days after being hospitalized and eight days after he tested positive for COVID-19. He was the first person reported to die of the virus in a Kentucky correctional facility. He passed away just eight days before his 50th birthday.
Layfierre once worked at a store called Beds Galore.
"He made some mistakes in his life, but he wasn't irredeemable," said his Louisville defense lawyer and friend Steve Esselman to the Courier Journal, calling his death "devastating."
Layfierre’s mother, Rosalind J. Mitchell, gathered with a group of other mothers outside the Governor’s Mansion, calling for more to be done to protect those at the Green River Correctional Complex. In an interview with LEX 18, she said that she had not been given the opportunity to talk to her son one last time after he was hospitalized.
"We loved him and we still love him," she said. "I want to see justice for the rest of these men. I don't want to see the same thing that happened to my son happen to anybody else."
