Miguel Arciba was born on June 23, 1957, in George West, Texas. His parents were Narciso and Sofia Arciba, both “loving” and “spiritual” parents. Miguel had a large family: he grew up with four brothers—Narciso Arciba Jr., David Arciba (both of whom preceded Miguel in death), Simon Arciba, and Adolfo Arciba—and eight sisters—Catarina Cuellar, San Juanita Gutierrez (both of whom also preceded Miguel in passing), Estella Martinez, Paula Gonzales, Olivia Kelly, Beatrice Rivera, Victoria Garcia, and Elena Aleman. He had eight children: daughters Margaret Rocha, Melissa Martinez, Kris Maria Montoya, and Destiny Arciba Zarazua, and sons Miguel Arciba, Jr., David Arciba, Micah Arciba, and Cecil Arciba. Additionally, Miguel had fourteen grandchildren.
On April 13th, Miguel, suffering from shortness of breath and COVID-19 symptoms, was taken to a local hospital. He was in the intensive care unit of Hospital Galveston for over a week; he passed away on May 3, 2020 at age 62.
The state of Texas is not doing nearly enough to curtail the spread of COVID-19 in their correctional facilities. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has put thousands of lives at risk. Miguel’s passing—as well as so many others—could and should have been prevented. His untimely death will not be just another number on a page; his legacy will be remembered, and he will be missed.
